Basic Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters

This course provides seafarers with the essential knowledge and awareness required to operate safely in polar waters. It addresses the unique environmental, operational, and safety challenges associated with navigation in Arctic and Antarctic regions.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

  1. Describe the characteristics of polar regions, including ice types and environmental
  2. Identify hazards associated with operating vessels in ice-covered and low-temperature
  3. Explain vessel performance limitations and machinery considerations in polar
  4. Contribute to voyage planning and risk assessment for operations in polar
  5. Apply safe working practices to prevent cold-related injuries and
  6. Recognize environmental protection requirements specific to polar
  7. Respond appropriately to emergencies, including ice damage, extreme weather, and survival situations in cold climates.

Entry Requirements

Participants must:

  • Hold a valid Certificate of Competency appropriate to their rank; or
  • Be enrolled in a maritime training program relevant to deck or engineering operations.
