Advanced Training for Ship Operation in Polar Waters

This Advanced Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters course covers the mandatory competences and the required knowledge, understanding and proficiencies prescribed in Section A-V/4, Table A-V/4-2 of the STCW Code.

Learning Outcomes

To meet the minimum standard of competence for all trainees assigned to shipboard duties as required in Section A-V/4 of the STCW Code, this course is designed to enable the trainees to successfully demonstrate their competences in advanced training for ships polar waters.

Specifically, at the end of the course the trainee must be able to:

  • plan and conduct a voyage in polar waters;
  • manage the safe operation of vessels operating in polar waters; and
  • maintain safety of the ship’s crew and passengers and the operational condition of life saving, firefighting and other safety systems.

Course Requirements

  • Entry to the course is open to masters, chief mates and officer-in-charge of a navigational watch with at least two (2) months of seagoing service within polar waters who have completed the Basic Training for Ships Operating in Polar Waters as specified in Section A-V/4-1.
