Basic Training for BITUMEN Tanker Cargo Operations

This course provides officers and crew with the theoretical knowledge and practical competencies required for the safe handling and carriage of bitumen cargo on bitumen tankers. It covers the physical and chemical properties of bitumen, cargo heating systems, tank cleaning procedures, safety precautions, environmental protection measures, and emergency response related to bitumen cargo operations.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, participants shall be able to:

  1. Describe the physical properties and behavior of bitumen as a heated
  2. Recognize hazards related to high-temperature cargo handling and vapor
  3. Explain the construction and arrangement of bitumen cargo tanks, pipelines, and heating
  4. Perform basic cargo operation planning, including pre-loading checks and risk
  5. Monitor cargo temperature, heating coils, and pumping operations
  6. Apply safe loading, carriage, and discharge procedures in accordance with company and regulatory
  7. Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) during cargo
  8. Respond effectively to incidents such as cargo leaks, overheating, fire risk, or personnel injury.

Course Requirements

Participants must:

  • Hold a valid maritime certificate relevant to their shipboard duties; or

  • Be enrolled in a recognized maritime training program preparing for tanker service.
