Ammonia (NH3) Familiarization Course

The Ammonia (NH3) Familiarization Course is designed to provide maritime personnel with the essential knowledge and practical skills required to handle ammonia safely in industrial and maritime environments. This course covers the physical and chemical properties of ammonia, hazard identification, the interpretation of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), threshold limit values, flammability risks, and the correct utilization of personal protective equipment (PPE).

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, trainees will be able to:

  • Understand Ammonia Hazards: Describe the chemical/physical properties of ammonia and identify associated health and safety hazards.
  • Apply Safety Documentation: Interpret relevant sections of the MSDS, including emergency, first aid, and handling/storage guidelines.
  • Manage Exposure Risks: Define threshold limit values and explain the importance of adhering to these limits.
  • Mitigate Flammability Risks: Identify conditions where ammonia becomes flammable or explosive and recognize appropriate ignition source controls.
  • Utilize PPE: Demonstrate the correct procedures for selecting, donning, doffing, and maintaining personal protective equipment.
